All students at Westview School receive one
hour per week of individual counseling with our licensed and experienced
counselors who build important relationships with them over the
course of a school year.
Each student’s therapy is geared towards meeting
individual school-related and developmental needs. These may include
such challenges as finding ways to overcome procrastination and
complete homework, developing strategies for staying on task,
building self-esteem, creating plans for a future after graduation
and finding ways to make and keep friends.
As our students approach graduation, Westview provides
college and vocational counseling. Students go on field trips to various prospective colleges campuses and our counselor is also available to help with the college application process, as appropriate.
WorkAbility is a California Department of Education
training program for adolescents. It is designed to promote career
awareness while students complete their high school program.
Along with classroom instruction and individual career
counseling, students are provided opportunities for
paid and unpaid work experience and receive ongoing support
and guidance in developing their future college and/or vocational options. Our students have held jobs in
various industries including film, retail, medical and fundraising.
The main focus of Westview’s WorkAbility program
at the middle school level is to increase self-knowledge and self-exploration.
The emphasis is primarily on goal setting and how to go about
achieving these goals via college or vocational school. High school
students delve more deeply into the career search process as they
complete interest and aptitude inventories, create resumes and
develop interview skills.
