CST Results for All Students
The California Standards Test (CST) show how well students are doing in relation to the state content standards. The CSTs include English-language arts adn mathematics in grades 2 and 11; science in grades 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11; and history/social sciene in grades 8, 10 and 11. Student scores are reported as performance levels. Detailed information regarding CST results for each grade and performance level, including the percent of students not tested, can be found at the CDE website at http://star.cde.ca.gov. Note: To protect student privacy, scores are not shown when the number of students tested is 10 or less.
This table displays the percent of students achieving at the Proficient or Advanced level (meeting or exceeding the state standards).

Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
Through the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program, students in grades 2 through 11 are tested annually in various subject areas. Currently, the STAR program includes California Standards Tests (CST) and a norm-referenced test (NRT). The CST tests English-language arts and mathematics in grades 2 through 11, science in grades 5, 9, 10, and 11, and history-social science in grades 8, 10, and 11. Prior to 2005, the NRT tested reading/language arts and mathematics in grades 2 through 11, spelling in grades 2 through 8, and science in grades 9 through 11. Beginning in 2005, the NRT tests reading/language arts, spelling, and mathematics in grades 3 and 7 only, and no longer tests science in any grade .
STAR TESTING SUMMARY
For the purpose of this report, we examined the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade test results from the 2002 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. We compared the scores of Westview students to their peers receiving special education services in Los Angeles Unified School District, all LAUSD students, and all California students. A comparison of these scores yielded the following information:
9th Grade Results
In English, Westview students scored higher than LAUSD special education and general education students. Test scores were also equal to those earned by all California students. 33% of Westview students scored in the proficient or advanced categories, as did 33% of all California students.
In History, Westview students scored much higher than LAUSD special education and general education students. Westview students also scored higher than all California students. 26.6 % of Westview students scored in the proficient or advanced categories compared to 24% of all California students scoring in the proficient or advanced category.
In Earth Science, Westview students scored higher than LAUSD special and general education students. 26.6% of our students scored in the proficient range while 18% of all California students scored in the proficient range. Westview and LAUSD did not have any students in the advanced range. The entire state had 4% of its students scoring in the advanced category.
10th Grade Results
In English, Westview students scored much higher than LAUSD students and California students. 66.6% of Westview students scored in the proficient or advanced categories compared to 32% of all California students.
In World History, Westview's scores in the advanced category were higher than LAUSD and California. 16.6% of Westview students scored in the advanced range compared to 8% of all California students. Westview did not have any students scoring in the proficient category. California had 16% scoring in the proficient range and LAUSD special education students had 2%.
In Biology, Westview students scored much higher than LAUSD and above the California scores. Westview had 49.9% of its students scoring in the proficient or advanced categories compared to 18% for all LAUSD, and 31% for all California students.
11th Grade Results
In English, Westview had more students scoring in the advanced category (12%) than LAUSD (8%) or California (11%). However, Westview did not have any students scoring in the proficient range compared to 3% for LAUSD special education, 16% for all LAUSD, and 20% for California.
In United States History, Westview had 25% scoring in the proficient category and 0% in the advanced. LAUSD special education had 7% total for both categories, LAUSD had 25% total for both categories, and California had 31% total for both categories.
In Biology, Westview students did not score very well with 40% of them scoring in the basic category and 60% in far below basic. These scores were lower than all of the other groups used for comparison. Unfortunately, this group of students took the biology test one year after completing the course and we believe this affected their scores.
State Award and Intervention Programs
Although state intervention and awards programs are currently in the California Education Code, the programs were not funded for the period addressed by this report. Therefore, there are currently no data available to report. |
